Provide advanced first aid

 

 

 

 

Information about this unit:

This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to provide an advanced first aid response, including management of the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival
of medical or other assistance.

 

The unit applies to workers who may be required to provide, coordinate and manage a
first aid response across a range of complex situations, include community and workplace settings
.

Prerequisite:

Students must be at least 14 years of age at the time of attendance.

Clothing: We suggest that you wear comfortable casual clothing, as the practical nature of the demonstrations and practice may possibly require bending, kneeling and lying on the floor. Pants and flat shoes are recommended.

 

Award Issued:

Students who successfully complete this nationally recognised training will be awarded
the statement of attainment for:

Initial Course duration:  

​Face to Face: 1 or 2 Days face to face training

 

Refresher Course duration:

Face to Face: 1 or 2 Days face to face training​

 

The following assessment tasks are required for this course:

Multiple choice questions - knowledge assessment

Short answer questions

 

Performance tasks:

  • Provide first aid treatment for basic wound care to a bleeding injury

  • Provide first aid treatment for the following injuries – sprains and strains using the RICE method

  • Provide treatment for a fractured forearm, splinting the injury with arm sling and bandages. Conduct secondary survey. Complete a first aid record form 

  • Provide first aid treatment to a casualty who has a burn injury

  • Provide first aid treatment for a casualty having an epileptic seizure.

  • Provide first aid treatment for poisoning

  • Provide first aid to a choking casualty with airway obstruction

  • Provide first aid treatment for a casualty who is in shock

  • Demonstrate safe manual handling techniques

  • Provide first aid treatment for a snake bite (or funnel web spider bite) using a PIT bandage

  • Knowledge of how to locate and interpret workplace policies and procedures. 

  • Provide first aid treatment for a casualty who has a sharp stick lodged in his eye.

  • Provide first aid treatment for a casualty who is suffering moderate hypothermia.

 

Respond to these simulated emergency scenarios:

  • Responding to a cardiac arrest

  • Administering an auto-injector to a person who is suffering an anaphylactic reaction

  • Administering  a reliever medication using a puffer and spacer to a victim suffering from asthma and complete a report

  • Providing treatment to multiple casualties

  • Incident evaluation and debriefing
