Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting

 

 

 

Information about this course:

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants, children and adults.


The course applies to educators and support staff working within an education and care
setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies. This unit of competency will contribute towards approved
first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National
Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulation (2011).

 

This unit of competency has been approved by ACECQA and meets the requirements of “First Aid, Asthma & Anaphylaxis”.

Prerequisite:

Students must be at least 14 years of age at the time of attendance.

Clothing: We suggest that you wear comfortable casual clothing, as the practical nature of the demonstrations and practice may possibly require bending, kneeling and lying on the floor. Pants and flat shoes are recommended.

 

Award Issued:

Students who successfully complete this nationally recognised training will be awarded
the statement of attainment for:

 

  • HLTAID012 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting

 

 

Initial Course duration:  

​Face to Face: 6 hours face to face training

 

Refresher Course duration:

Face to Face: 6 hours face to face training

​

Blended Learning duration:

3  hours online learning

2 hours Face to Face practical assessments

​

Important information regarding course durations:

Recertification is recommended every 3 years.

 

To qualify for a refresher course, you must bring a copy of your current certificate 
to the training session. You will then be required to:

 

  • Complete the online or downloadable pre-course workbook and attend a practical session.

  • Proof of currency must be submitted to qualify for this course

The following assessment tasks are required for this course:

Written assessment consisting of 69 multiple choice questions - knowledge assessment

9 performance tasks - Practical assessments

Simulated workplace scenarios:

  • Recognise an emergency - call the ambulance - perform CPR

  • Administering an auto-injector to a person who is suffering an anaphylactic reaction

  • Administering  a reliever medication using a puffer and spacer to a victim suffering from asthma and complete a report
